Letter to NYT re Stuttering and Philip Garber

Oct 12

See the words we sent to NYT letter to the editor (below), in response to their very positive piece on Philip Garber and how he confronted discrimination in his class – because of his stutter.

See the original New York Times article from 10/11/11 (http://nyti.ms/qoYFKq) and see another piece with a magnificent video of Philip at http://gaw.kr/q6mOgt.

Philip is such a strong, confident young man. We envy his courage and determination and wish more people would appreciate that people who stutter are just like you and me. They have wonderful things to say, it just takes them a little bit more time.

How we listen can cause them to shut down and stop sharing… or how we listen can encourage them to persevere and transcend their challenge.

Philip is a heroic model of the latter.

Ms. Snyder should learn from Philip – the power of our words and our drive to communicate are inherently what make us human! If not for Philips immeasurable spirit, Ms. Snyder’s comments could have killed a young person. Instead she stoked his flame.

Moral of the story: Watch what you say and don’t take your words for granted. People who stutter know this lesson well!

Two professional thoughts born out of the latest research and my clinical practice…

1. For the language ready child
For youngsters who are typical to above average with languages, bilingualism is a gift. I have seen tri-lingual and even quadra-lingual children, and it is an astounding testament to the most amazing creation – the brain! These kids know when to use each language, with whom, and with the grammatical rules of each language culled and exercised with developing precision over time. (Unlike languages like “Yeshivishe” or Ladino which blend languages and do not adhere the rules of either one entirely.)

* The catch is – critical mass of exposure. A video here, a book there will not be enough to teach a youngster Spanish, Latin or Hebrew/English. To give children real bilingualism – with all it’s amazing advantages – youngsters need extended exposure to each language. This point impacts school, home and extra-curricular decisions.

2. For the language sensitive child
How many of us know youngsters who seemed to be extra-ordinarily late talkers? Even in one language they had a harder time sorting things out. Some of these kids present as grade-schoolers who run to science, phys-ed or recess, but they auspiciously find their way to the bathroom – or anywhere to escape the classroom – during “English.”

* For these kids, it is far better to choose ONE LANGUAGE. Not necessarily forever, but definitely for starters. By getting more exposure to one language, and simultaneously reducing the resources required to sort out the rules of a second competing language, these kids have a better chance to get the first language right. Once they have their foundations in place, they are better prepared to succeed in that language, and then the decision can be made to reintroduce the second language.

Choosing languages, especially for expatriates and immigrants is a very personal decision. But the decision should be informed by what we can learn from research and practice.
