This three-day retreat will begin the process of transcending stuttering using awareness and confidence-building side-by-side with the most useful and effective communication techniques. Letter to NYT re Stuttering and Philip Garber

See the words we sent to NYT letter to the editor (below), in response to their very positive piece on Philip Garber and how he confronted discrimination in his class – because of his stutter.

Philip is such a strong, confident young man. We envy his courage and determination and wish more people would appreciate that people who stutter are just like you and me. They have wonderful things to say, it just takes them a little bit more time.

How we listen can cause them to shut down and stop sharing… or how we listen can encourage them to persevere and transcend their challenge.

Philip is a heroic model of the latter.

Ms. Snyder should learn from Philip – the power of our words and our drive to communicate are inherently what make us human! If not for Philips immeasurable spirit, Ms. Snyder’s comments could have killed a young person. Instead she stoked his flame.

Moral of the story: Watch what you say and don’t take your words for granted. People who stutter know this lesson well!

The teachers are prepared (hopefully!) The parents are ready. And the kids anxiously await meeting their new teachers and friends.

For some, the first day back to school goes really smoothly. For others it’s fraught with questions and concern.

Will my child’s teacher appreciate his/her brilliance?
Will my child feel safe? Physically. And safe to be who he/she is?
Will my child be able to meet the demands of the class and school?
Will my child’s spirit flourish and grow this year, or will their spark dwindle?

This video warms the heart and sends an important message. No two children are the same! We (parents and educators) all need to identify, embrace and cultivate our students, so they blossom to be the absolute BEST they can be.
